A MESSAGE FROM SHONA MCDONALD
“2020 was the year that saw healthcare go local, not just here in South African but globally. It has been a turning point for health professionals that we don’t dare ignore. Never before has it been more important to understand the implications of our roles and responsibilities in ensuring that there is equal access to quality services and support, no matter how challenging this might be.
The SSE recognises that the world is far from realizing the ideals of the 2030 SDGs. What is clear however, is that the effects of the pandemic and the uncertainty it is causing is having a devastating effect on the lives of millions of South African citizens. Most importantly 2020 has highlighted for us that by working together, fostering agency, building ecosystems of support and using collaborative systems change approaches, we can change the way the story ends for people with disabilities and their families.
By working with communities, governments, businesses, and donor organisations we can continue to identify and address the underlying root causes of stigma and bias and can successfully begin to influence, shift and transform systems at many levels.
We are here to assist you in striving for lasting change in behaviour and practice that supports the development of each individual you assist. We are here to support you as you actively work with- and for – inclusive, sustainable and compassionate communities across South Africa.
