Shona & Dean Featured in The Impact Action Podcast

The Impact Action Podcast:

In this episode, Shona McDonald, Executive Director of Shonaquip Social Enterprise, and Dean Mubaiwa, mechanical engineer and technical lead at the Centre for Inclusive Innovation and Entrepreneurship, share their perspectives on advancing assistive technology in South Africa.

The conversation explores the journey of ShonaquipSE, from the development of its first posture-support wheelchair to becoming Africa’s only ISO 13485–certified wheelchair design and manufacturing facility, and the role of engineering innovation in creating mobility solutions that are both accessible and suited for African contexts.

Together, they discuss the importance of local manufacturing, innovation in assistive technologies, and the value of partnerships with the North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit Faculty of Engineering in supporting initiatives that improve mobility and independence for people with disabilities.

This episode highlights how inclusive engineering, innovation and purposeful collaboration can transform opportunities and contribute to a more accessible and equitable future.
